If you do that alright, that will happen more often. And at some point someone, because they're in a rush, will deligate some music related work to you. Then is the time to not fuck up but contribute in a meaningful way. Sooner or later, when you manage to stick around, you will be asked of your opinion.

You will be responsible for making coffee and getting everyone lunch, but also be able to sit in during brain storming, scoring sessions, mixing and so on. When you have a decent show reel, you can apply for internships at studios and if you're lucky, you will be deemed worthy of it. Just don't fall into the trap of never leaving the ad music industry again.įrom there you're getting projects under your belt and start making a name for yourself. At least ad people are very loyal if your work is good is my experience and will keep coming back to you. To make money, try getting some gigs for ad music and use it also as a learning experience (film schools and advertising industry are two sides of the same coin). You will learn that you're about 50 to 80% happy with the final outcome of a project (there's never time for more, or you're really good or really convinced of yourself). Deadlines, promises of final picture locks (NEVER to be believed), budget troubles (not yours, theirs) and so on. You will get to know (on a small scale) the project management side of things. Don't expect to be payed, at this stage every opportunity to work on a (semi) real project is your payment. When you feel you have decently scored some scenes, get in touch with film schools and ask if students there want you to score their material for them. I'd recommend watching a scene, finding some kind of tempo (literally tap your finger on the table while watching it and see which tempo seems right) and finding key momemts where you'll have resolutions, changes, stops etc. Measure and tempo changes are your friends here. You will have to develop a feel for it, since it can be tricky fitting a piece of music with 4/4 measure and a fixed tempo to an evolving scene. Pacing of the music, progressions, changes. If you combine sad with heroic in your music, the impact the score has may be enhanced. You can also explore what other emotions might be involved, maybe someone heroic died and the people left behind feel some kind of honor having known the person. If someone experiences loss in a scene, you can make a sad theme to accompany it. Preferably, the music adds a layer to the story. Now, that doesn't mean to always tell the same story the visuals already tell you. With bold I mean, really really go for the thing you're trying to convey with the music. Decide what's best for the scene and be bold in your choices.

Might be some feint background music, might also be some full front aural attack on senses and emotions. The best music is the one supporting the story the best. "The best film music is the one you barely notice" is a phrase that's often thrown around. Film is a visual medium, but is greatly enhanced by music. Many DAWs support video, so you can just load the clip directly into your DAW (I use Ableton). Don't worry about tools, just use what feels right to you (doesn't have to be orchestral either, often a simple piano score suffices to pin down your ideas). Preferably ones that you know the context of but don't know the original music for that scene by heart.

If you're serious about it, start by scoring movie scenes just for yourself.
